Heath Craig, LMHC

Licensed Mental Health Counselor
My Background:
Hi, I’m Heath, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. I started my journey in mental health back in 2012 as a substance abuse counselor. Over the years, I’ve worked in various settings, including educational programs for at-risk teens, community mental health, Veterans re-entry therapy, and private practice. I earned my psychology degree from the American Military University and then completed a master’s in clinical Mental Health Counseling at National Louis University. While working as a residential student counselor, I focused on dealing with behavioral, emotional, and trauma-related issues. As a graduate student, I spent two years helping individuals with psychotic and mood disorders at Sarasota’s Mental Health Community Center. My role as a Readjustment Counselor with the Department of Veterans Affairs allowed me to support combat Veterans transitioning to civilian life, giving me a deep understanding of the impacts of trauma, including PTSD.
My Approach to Helping:
My helping philosophy is rooted in a holistic, person-centered, eclectic approach, informed by a wide array of evidence-based techniques, and an abundance of experiences working with diverse populations. With a foundation in substance abuse counseling, I’ve gained valuable insights into the complexities of mental health, particularly in addressing trauma and emotional challenges. Through my work with at-risk teens, Veterans, and individuals facing mood disorders, I’ve developed a deep understanding of how different life circumstances, including trauma and adversity, shape mental well-being.
About My Therapeutic Style:
I believe in meeting each person where they are, acknowledging their unique experiences, and empowering them to engage in their healing process. Whether it’s navigating behavioral and emotional struggles, learning about mental illness and how to manage symptoms, assisting Veterans transitioning from combat to civilian life, or working with individuals managing psychotic and mood disorders, my approach remains compassionate, empathetic, and solution focused. I strive to create a safe, trusting space where individuals can feel heard, supported, and ultimately, empowered to reclaim their well-being.
Why Seeking Therapy Is a Strength, Not a Weakness:
Seeking therapy is a sign of strength, not weakness. It takes courage to acknowledge when you need support and to actively work on understanding yourself better. Therapy is a tool for growth, helping you develop healthier coping strategies, improve relationships, and navigate life’s challenges with resilience. By reaching out, you’re taking control of your mental well-being and investing in your future, proving that self-care and personal growth are empowering choices. It’s a brave step toward healing, self-discovery, and living a more fulfilling life.
